Run Moorhold on IONOS Cloud
IONOS Cloud is our recommended provider. It is owned and run in Germany, bills by the hour, and has the 32 GB machine Moorhold needs without the shortages we have seen elsewhere.
At a glance
- Cost
- About €44 a month
- Where your data lives
- Germany (Frankfurt or Berlin)
- How many steps
- About 20 steps and 2 pastes
Machine: a Memory Cube L (8 vCPU, 32 GB), or a custom server with 8 cores and 32 GB.
Prices are on-demand, monthly and exclude VAT, as published on 5 October 2026 (IONOS Cloud prices). Providers change their prices; check before you buy.
This describes how installing Moorhold yourself will work. Three pieces are still being built: the installer, the access keys and the first-run steps in the portal. Until they are ready, we install Moorhold for you: see Have us install it.
What is different on IONOS
IONOS asks for three things other providers do not. None of them is hard:
- A Virtual Data Centre. You create one first, and choose its location (Frankfurt or Berlin). The server goes inside it.
- A login for the server. IONOS requires an SSH key or a password when you create a server. Create one; you will not need it, because the server installs itself.
- A public network. Connect the server to a public LAN with internet access, so it gets an address people can reach.
These steps come from a walkthrough on paper, made on 5 October 2026; we have not yet created a server this way. If the console looks different, tell us.
Next steps
- Get an access key.
- Follow the guide: IONOS or Hetzner in about 20 minutes.
If you get stuck, email hello@moorhold.dev and say which step you reached. Please do not send passwords, keys or other secrets.
